The number of private sector jobs on Long Island increased over the year by 2,400, or 0.2 percent, to 1,088,000 in June 2008, a new record for the month. The following sectors added jobs over the year: educational and health services (+5,700), leisure and hospitality (+2,200), natural resources, mining and construction (+700) and other services (+400). Employment losses occured in: financial activities (-2,600), manufacturing (-2,000), trade, transportation and utilities (-1,100), professional and business services (-600) and information (-300). Government employment rose (+4,300) over the year. The Island's 4.7 percent unemployment rate in June was up from 4.6 percent in May and up from 3.6 percent in June of 2007. This was the highest unemployment rate for the month of June since 2003.
